Wade Phillips could soon add another Super Bowl ring to his list of NFL accolades.

The 1965 Port Neches-Groves graduate is the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams (13-3), who face the New Orleans Saints (13-3) on the road in the NFC Championship game today.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

While in high school, Phillips was a member of an Indians Footbal teams coached by his father, O.A. “Bum” Phillips.

Both Southeast Texas coaching legends are members of the Museum of the Gulf Coast’s Sports Hall of Honor.

The younger Phillips already has one championship ring, winning it as the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos during the team’s Super Bowl 50 win over the Carolina Panthers in 2016.

A copy of PN-G’s school newspaper, the Pow Wow from Nov. 20 1964 features a photo of both of the Phillips ahead of a Dad’s Night recognition game against the French High Buffaloes.

The caption under the photo reads:

FATHER AND SON — Dad’s Night will have a special meaning for coach O.A. Phillips and Wade, senior, who plays on varsity.

The paper sits in a glass case in the high school foyer.
