The Mid-County Madness rivalry has long been a heartbeat of the PNG community, bringing generations together in a celebration of football and local pride.
This year, Sports Illustrated named the storied matchup with Nederland as the top high school football rivalry in the nation, following a poll that recognized its electric atmosphere and passionate fan base. Mid-County Madness secured the top spot with 9,315 votes, earning 72.59% of the total. Find the Sports Illustrated article here.
The matchup was dubbed “Mid-County Madness” as the term became heavily used in the building to the teams’ 1995 meeting by former Port Arthur News sports writer Tom Halliburton.
It has since been ingrained into the matchup. With anticipation building, the two teams will face off once again in what promises to be another unforgettable chapter of the rivalry.
PNG currently leads the all-time series with a record of 54-39-7, including last year’s 41-16 victory at Bulldog Stadium. Under Head Coach Jeff Joseph, PNG has won the past two games — and a win this Friday would secure a third-consecutive MCM victory, the teams’ 23rd-straight victory and the Bum Phillips Bowl Championship and trophy again.
