The Indians varsity girls soccer team will set LC-M in its sights on Tuesday, coming off a weekend where it went 4-0 the annual PN-G Cajun Classic tournament.

The 16-team field — which included varsity and JV brackets — ran from Thursday through Saturday and was played across the main field at Indian Stadium and the adjacent practice fields.

Senior Grace Seymour led all Indians scorers with five goals throughout a weekend which Coach Aimee Bates said she saw standout efforts from her defense.

After opening the tournament with a 2-1 win against Kelly on Thursday afternoon, the team followed up with a 5-1 win against Waller that same night.

The team’s only matchup Friday saw them secure a 2-1 win against College Station — a team they’d failed to defeat in five years of prior meetings.

“The team really came together this tournament and learned how to come from behind (to win),” Bates said Monday. “We were behind in three of our matches and pulled out wins.  The best defensive play of the tournament is when it looked like College Station was going to tie it up off a corner with the ball sailing across the goal line and Halley Smith headed it out.”

Scoring goals throughout the weekend were Breeana Riggs, Mia Delgadillo and Zoe Scroggs. The team is scheduled to compete in the Georgetown (TX) tournament this weekend after Tuesday’s road match at LC-M.

Kickoff at LC-M is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the JV scheduled to kickoff at 5 p.m.

“We are looking forward to heading to Georgetown to compete where the soccer state tournament is held in April,” Bates said.
