This year, the Indians overwhelmed the Bulldogs during the annual Mid-County Madness matchup, notching a 34-21 victory and sealing the Bum Phillips Trophy’s home at The Reservation at least until next season.

The highlight was one of many for the Indians, whose season ended at 9-4 overall, with a 6-1 record in District 12-5A Div. II record.

The team opened its season with a win over Silsbee, a game which was one of many Fox Sports SW offered viewers a live look-in for a Week 1 showcase.

Though a pair of losses followed up that win, PN-G won out the rest of season. A forced forfeit negated one win, but the Indian faithful never saw defeat with their own eyes  again until the team met Fort Bend Marshall in the regional round at Baytown.

The Mid-County game rounded out PN-G’s regular season. Students dressed up all week leading up to the Friday night to show off during spirit week.

This game was tense for everyone involved, with students and parents all yelling and cheering for their team to win. The last time PN-G won the matchup was in 2016, 41-21, so everyone was looking forward to another big win for the Indians.

Senior quarterback Roschon Johnson scored five touchdowns, while defender Tyler Jackson hauled in two interceptions during the game, the 95th in the annual series.

A week after the victory, Port Arthur News sports editor I.C. Murrell brought the Bum Phillips Trophy to PN-G, with the team celebrating with it under a confetti shower during the Northside pep rally.

Every year the game gets played with extreme effort and intensity to show who the “better“ school is. This year it turned out to be the Indians — hopefully next year it will be too.
