To improve their photography and editing, 13 NDN Press photographers attended the ILPC/TAJE Summer Workshop for Photojournalism at Texas State University in San Marcos.
The workshop lasted three days, from June 14 to 16, with classes each day in the Old Main Building consisting of lectures and presentations on photography, editing and caption writing.
Led by Mark Murray and Deanne Brown, students were assigned to take pictures around the university campus, local parks, a farmers market, and more.
“This weekend has help me grow closer to my fellow editors and learn how to be better leaders,” incoming Photography Editor Izzy Zeig said.
Awards were given for students who showed excellence in their respective assignments:

- ADVANCED SPORTS ACTION: Jozlyn Oglesbee
- ADVANCED FEATURE PHOTO: Celia Ruiz

Additionally, students had “Staff Fun Night” with NDN Press adviser, Mr. Tobias, where they all ate at Ivar’s River Pub, swam in the San Marcos River, and ate dessert at Rhea’s Ice Cream afterwards.
Overall, the ILPC trip hosted at Texas State was a way for PNG students to improve their skills and gain new perspectives for the upcoming school year.
“Winning awards is great, but the real award came in the work the students produced over the weekend,” Mr. Tobias said. “When you spend that time walking around in the heat, on deadline, and at the computer editing, on deadline, it pushes you and makes you a stronger photographer. Everyone did great, it was a great weekend.”
