Port Neches-Groves football alum and NFL coaching legend Wade Phillips ('62) hands the Bum Phillips Bowl trophy to the varsity football team after defeating Nederland in the annual Mid-County Madness rivalry football game, 41-16, at Bulldog Stadium in Nederland on Friday, Oct. 27, 2023.
The Bum Phillips trophy was christened in the 2013 matchup between the two teams on Friday, Oct. 18. The elder Phillips tragically passed away that evening as the teams battled for the trophy for the first time.
Bum Phillips coached both teams in shorts stints during the 1950s and 60s, his last stint being with PNG, where he coached as son, Wade, played.
