Welders’ effort sparks state competition berth
February 21, 2020
A SkillsUSA welding competition was held last Thursday and Friday, Feb. 13 and 14, at the Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) where Brandon Duhon, senior, won the silver medal for welding and qualified for the state competition on April 2 in Corpus Christi.
“It was an accomplishment for me,” Duhon said. “It really put me to the test in that competition. They had us do different positions and different things with cutting and welding at the same time.”
Also competing in the welding competition were the senior team of Eric Mendoza, Sheldon Wages and Damian Cunningham, who received fourth place in fabrication.

“We worked for five hours during the competition,” Cunningham said. “As a team I feel like we were cooperative, and made the best of our time. We made sure to stay focused, and got the work we needed done.”
